{"id":1219,"date":"2012-10-14T15:06:04","date_gmt":"2012-10-14T22:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/?p=1219"},"modified":"2012-10-18T20:34:52","modified_gmt":"2012-10-19T03:34:52","slug":"dean-bensen-artist-bio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/?p=1219","title":{"rendered":"Dean Bensen Artist Bio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Started working in glass in Idaho in 1990. \u00a0He as been working in glass in California for 14 years.<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/deanbensen.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">www.deanbensen.com\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dean attended The College of Idaho where he graduated with a B.A. in Art in 1990.\u00a0\u00a0He studied glass under John Anderson a graduate of\u00a0San Jose\u00a0Sate\u00a0University\u00a0and\u00a0AlfredUniversity.\u00a0\u00a0His fascination in glass soon started a\u00a0hunger for what he had been missing since his youth, an immersion into the exploration and development of his creative side.\u00a0Upon receiving his degree he moved to Ketchum\/Sun Valley,\u00a0Idaho\u00a0where he continued working in glass at a local studio.<\/p>\n<p>In 1997 Dean returned to\u00a0California\u00a0to pursue glassblowing as a full-time career.\u00a0Immersing himself in the Bay Area glass scene, he began working for many local artists.\u00a0\u00a0Slowly he began teaching at places such as, San Jose State University, Palo Alto High School, Corning Glass School, Bay Area Glass Institute (BAGI), and Public Glass.\u00a0\u00a0He attended\u00a0Pilchuck\u00a0Glass\u00a0School\u00a0in\u00a0Washington\u00a0on scholarship and has been recognized by local publications for his excellence in creating glass art.\u00a0\u00a0In 2007 Dean was featured on the Hallmark Channel\u2019s morning show called \u201cNew Morning with Timberly Whitfield\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Dean\u2019s work has been juried into many shows and exhibitions, like the\u00a0San Francisco\u00a0Airport\u00a0Museums\u00a0and exhibits at the Oakland Museum of California and\u00a0Oakland\u00a0Airport.\u00a0\u00a0His work is featured nationally and in many private collections.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002 Dean started to develop a body of work that would become the foundation for his ideas based on the existence of the Old Growth Redwood Forest.\u00a0\u00a0Using both clear glass and color, he focused initially on environmental concerns.\u00a0\u00a0As his concepts evolved, Dean\u2019s work grew further investigating the life cycles in nature, their significance, and the interplay between the earth and various species.\u00a0\u00a0The extensive murrine patterns he uses in some of his pieces are the center point of this series.\u00a0\u00a0Each slice of murrine serves to highlight one of nature\u2019s footprints, marking the passage of time and a glimpse of history, the rings of life in a felled tree.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1450\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Bensen-Discarded.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1450\" class=\" wp-image-1450    \" title=\"Bensen - Discarded\" src=\"http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Bensen-Discarded-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Bensen-Discarded-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Bensen-Discarded-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.californiastudioglass.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Bensen-Discarded-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1450\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Discarded&#8221;&#8221;<br \/>Dean Benson<br \/>2008<br \/> Hot sculpted blown glass, sandcarved and etched<br \/>15&#8243;
